Homemade Facewash -- DIY

*This is a guest post from Amanda of the blog Open Hands. Amanda is a member of the Thrifty Nifty Mommy Blogger Network. I love new DIY projects and can't wait to try this myself!*

As we are on this journey to eliminate chemicals from our home I am finding out two things: 1) its time consuming! I spend more time in the kitchen than ever before, and I spend a lot of time researching.   2) It can be expensive!  Now there are many ways to make "clean leaving" less expensive, but they tend to be more time consuming. So when I find an inexpensive change that doesn't take too much of my time I am over the moon excited!

One thing that I have recently changed is my face wash. When we initially started making changes my mind went mostly to food, I honestly didn't give much thought to the things I was putting "on" my body. Then I was introduced to Lemongrass Spa. I quickly fell in love with all of these great, clean products for my skin and to this day I am using the makeup and face masks from them.

However, one day I was talking face wash with a friend and she was telling me about her cleansing ritual and it was something that had me really intrigued, I knew it would be more affordable than what I was doing and it sounded easy enough! So I set out to search it on the internet and found The Oil Cleansing Method on My Merry Messy Life

After reading her post on this method I decided it was definitely something I wanted to try out. I went onto Amazon.com and ordered my Jojoba Oil and Castor Oil along with a container to put the wash in.  (Love this container, check it out)

My oils arrived just in the knick of time, I was almost out of my face cleanser so I was in desperate need of throwing this together! Now with 3 little one's and all the things life throws my way its hard to find a lot of down time, but in just a few minutes my new face cleanser was all ready to go!

My skin is what we would call "combination" skin, before having kids I had the most oily skin ever! In high school, I carried those little "blot" pads with me and used them & my pressed powder many times throughout the day to keep the shine under control. Thankfully now my skin is much better! So for my combination of oils I used 1 part Castor Oil to 4 parts Jojoba oil. Your "carrier oil" which can be, Jojoba, Almond, etc.. is your moisture, so if you have dry skin use more, oily skin use less. Your Castor Oil is what cleans so this is critical to the mix.

Once I had this together , per the recommendation on My Merry Messy Life I added some essential oils, I attempted to use 2 drops of orange, 2 of Rosemary and 2 of Cedarwood like she suggest, but my orange just came pouring out and I got about 10 drops...whoops! Honestly though, I love the smell, I thought the orange would become overpowering but its not at all. The smell of the 3 together is so refreshing in the mornings, I just love it!

Cedarwood is also great for acne and the Orange & Rosemary are both not only great astringents but can be uplifting to your mood.  I have been now using this as my face cleanser for 3 weeks and I love it! I don't think I will ever go back to using anything else. I spent $25 on the products, and $8 of that was for the bottle to put my cleanser in. So for $17 I bought my oils and I am pretty sure it gave me enough to last 6 months to a year! What an incredible savings & I know exactly what is going onto (and therefore into) my body!
